MPO Conversion Cable

MPO-8 to 2x MPO-4 OM4 Conversion Cable

This 8 fiber OM4 conversion cable runs one MPO-8 PC female connector to two MPO-4 PC female connectors on a violet jacket. It splits one 8-fiber MPO port into two 4-fiber MPO legs inside the MPO family, with no LC fanout, no cassette and no module in between. All ends are PC polished and factory terminated by BWNFiber. Standard lengths run 1–50 m with LSZH, OFNP or OFNR jacket options, and polarity is fixed at manufacture in Type A, B or C wiring.

Product Overview

This 8 fiber OM4 conversion cable runs one MPO-8 PC female connector to two MPO-4 PC female connectors on a violet jacket. It splits one 8-fiber MPO port into two 4-fiber MPO legs inside the MPO family, with no LC fanout, no cassette and no module in between. All ends are PC polished and factory terminated by BWNFiber. Standard lengths run 1–50 m with LSZH, OFNP or OFNR jacket options, and polarity is fixed at manufacture in Type A, B or C wiring.

The map is fixed: four fibers to the first MPO-4 leg, four fibers to the second. Because conversion happens inside the cable, the link keeps one fewer mated MPO pair than a conversion-module build, which protects the loss budget on OM4 parallel optics.

For buyers comparing component forms at this map, a conversion cable is the right choice when the transition point sits inside a link rather than at a panel, when the lowest connection count matters, and when no re-configuration is needed later. A conversion module is the better fit when the mapping must sit in a panel and be re-usable across moves. The MPO conversion cable vs module guide covers that decision in full.

Selection Guidance

  • Confirm the map before the cable. This page is the 8→2×4 map only: one MPO-8 in, two MPO-4 out, eight live fibers. If the BOM calls for MPO-12→2×MPO-4, MPO-16→2×MPO-8 or MPO-24 maps, those sit on separate pages in the MPO conversion cable range.
  • PC on every end. Mixed APC-PC polishing is a different build (APC on the MPO-8 end) and a different page. Do not mate PC ends into APC ports.
  • Polarity is a drawing, not a toggle. This SKU is not polarity-switchable in the field. Pick Type A, B or C from the conversion wiring drawing before production; the MPO polarity channel design workflow walks the full channel check.
  • Length is measured from the single MPO-8 end to the farthest MPO-4 leg end. State which leg geometry the quote should follow if the two legs differ.
  • Female ends need pinned mates. All three ends are unpinned female; confirm the trunk or equipment side supplies guide pins.

When the transition is permanent and loss budget is tight, the cable form wins. When the point must flex, take the module decision to the conversion cable vs module comparison.

Applications

  • OM4 plants that split one 8-fiber MPO port into two 4-fiber MPO ports for parallel-optics distribution
  • Re-mapping high-count trunk fibers to lower-count MPO interfaces without adding a cassette or conversion module
  • High-density and multi-plane data center fabrics where port groups are divided across rows or planes
  • Migration work where installed OM4 backbone fiber must feed new 4-fiber MPO interfaces

Do not use this page for: the mixed-polish APC-PC variant, MPO-to-LC SR4 breakout jumpers (see the MPO breakout & harness cable range), or singlemode OS2 builds.

Order Guide

This SKU is not polarity-switchable in the field. Choose polarity from the conversion wiring drawing, then overall length and jacket material. All-PC OM4 default — do not merge with the APC-PC variant.

Why Source from BWNFiber

  • Factory-terminated MPO ends on every leg, inspected before shipment
  • Official naming keeps Conversion Cable off Breakout and Patch Cord URLs, so the BOM stays unambiguous
  • Interface count and live-fiber count are written into the product name: 8 fibers, not a nominal ferrule size
  • Lengths from 1 m to 50 m on catalog SKUs, plus project lengths on the drawing
  • Jacket options LSZH, OFNP and OFNR under one part family
  • OEM print, fiber-map records and IL/RL reports for project handover
  • All-PC OM4 8→2×4 is the canonical multimode URL for this map: one page, one build, no mixed variants

Send the conversion map, polish pair, polarity drawing, jacket and length. BWNFiber returns a build sheet before production.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an MPO-8 to 2x MPO-4 conversion cable actually convert?

It takes the eight fibers of one MPO-8 port and maps four fibers onto each of two MPO-4 legs, all inside the cable. The conversion replaces a cassette or module at that point in the link, so the channel keeps one fewer mated MPO pair.

How is this different from the APC-PC version?

Polish. This page is PC on all three ends, which is the multimode default. The the corresponding configuration build puts APC on the MPO-8 end against PC on the MPO-4 ends and serves ports that specify that mix.

Is this an SR4 breakout to LC?

No. Both output legs are MPO-4 connectors. If the link must land on LC duplex ports, use an MPO breakout or harness cable instead.

Can polarity be changed after delivery?

No. Polarity is fixed at manufacture in Type A, B or C wiring. Approve the conversion wiring drawing at order stage.

What insertion loss should I expect?

Final IL/RL limits follow the BWNFiber test specification for the loss grade selected at order stage, with IL verified per IEC 61300-3-4.Ask for a per-position IL/RL report tied to the serial number.

What lengths are available?

Twelve catalog steps from 1 m to 50 m. Length is measured from the single MPO-8 end to the farthest MPO-4 leg end; custom lengths and pulling eyes are quoted on the drawing.
