Why Use MMC Cabling?
- Higher panel density: the smaller connector and adapter footprint supports denser patching when used with a compatible VSFF panel.
- Parallel-optics configurations: 12F, 16F and 24F assemblies are available for links whose transceiver interface and lane mapping require those fiber counts.
- Factory termination: jumpers, trunks and harnesses can be terminated and optically tested before shipment.
- Migration flexibility: MMC-to-MPO or MMC-to-LC harnesses can connect new MMC cabling to existing equipment interfaces.
Density, fiber count and polarity must be confirmed against the exact panel and transceiver datasheets. A connector format should never be selected from the Ethernet speed alone.
MMC Product Portfolio
| Product | Best suited for | Available configuration |
|---|---|---|
| MMC Connectors & Adapters | VSFF patch panels and equipment interfaces | 12F, 16F or 24F; male/female; UPC/APC |
| MMC-MMC Jumper / Patch Cord | Short links and cross-connects | OS2 or OM4 verified; other fiber options by project confirmation |
| MMC-MMC Trunk Cable | Backbone, inter-rack and distribution-area links | Pre-terminated multi-MMC trunk; pulling eye optional |
| MMC Breakout / Harness Cable | MMC-to-LC, SC or MPO interface conversion | Equal or staggered legs; custom mapping |
MMC vs. MPO, SN and MDC
| Interface | Fibers per connector | Typical role | Directly mates with MMC? |
|---|---|---|---|
| MMC | 12F / 16F / 24F | Multi-fiber VSFF jumper, trunk or harness | Yes, with the matching MMC interface |
| MPO / MPO-16 | Multiple fiber counts | Mature multi-fiber cabling ecosystem | No |
| SN | 2F | High-density duplex patching | No |
| MDC | 2F | High-density duplex patching | No |
MMC is best considered for new VSFF-compatible builds or planned migration zones. MPO remains appropriate when broad installed-base compatibility is the priority. Connecting different interface families requires a purpose-built harness or panel arrangement.
How to Specify an MMC Assembly
- Identify the exact transceiver and optical interface.
- Confirm active fiber count, lane mapping and link polarity.
- Choose OS2 for single-mode links or the required multimode grade for the specified reach.
- Confirm connector gender, UPC/APC polish and mating interface.
- Define length, jacket, labeling, packaging and test-report requirements.
Send BWNFiber the transceiver list, rack layout and fiber plan when the mapping is uncertain. The configuration can then be reviewed before a quotation or production drawing is issued.
Testing and Project Documentation
Available project documentation can include insertion-loss and return-loss results, cable labels and configuration drawings. Acceptance limits depend on fiber type, connector polish and the approved product specification. Request the applicable datasheet and test format with your quotation.
Request an MMC BOM Review
Send your transceiver list, rack elevations and required link count. BWNFiber can review the fiber count, polarity and cable configuration before quoting.
