MMC Breakout and Harness Cable Assemblies

An MMC breakout harness converts a high-density MMC interface into LC, SC or MPO connections for equipment fan-out and migration projects. BWNFiber supports project-specific fiber counts, channel maps and equal or staggered leg lengths, subject to an approved configuration drawing.

The MMC portfolio also lists SC, MPO-12, MPO-16 and MPO-24 breakout options, plus 12F and 24F MMC-side configurations. These builds require confirmation of connector quantities, active fibers and channel mapping before quotation.

Choosing the Breakout Interface

  • LC Duplex: use for equipment whose optical modules present duplex LC interfaces.
  • SC: use only where the equipment or existing distribution interface requires SC.
  • MPO-12, MPO-16 or MPO-24: use for migration or interconnection with the matching MPO interface and verified polarity.

Do not select the breakout solely from a transceiver’s package name, such as QSFP-DD or OSFP. Confirm the actual optical receptacle, lane count and reach in the transceiver datasheet.

Equal vs. Staggered Legs

Equal legs simplify assemblies where destination ports are aligned. Staggered legs match different port positions and reduce excess slack in dense racks. Provide the rack elevation or the required leg-by-leg dimensions so the harness can be built and labeled correctly.

Information Required for a Drawing

  • MMC fiber count, gender and polish
  • Far-end connector type, quantity and polish
  • Fiber type and channel mapping
  • Overall length and each breakout-leg length
  • Jacket, fan-out tube, labels and packaging
  • Quantity and IL/RL report requirements

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a breakout cable and a harness cable?

Both terms describe an assembly that fans one multi-fiber interface into several lower-count connections. Harness often emphasizes a defined leg layout and port map.

Can MMC connect to MPO?

Yes, through a purpose-built MMC-to-MPO harness. The interfaces do not mate directly, so fiber count and polarity must be mapped in the assembly.

What does staggered leg mean?

Each leg is cut to a different specified length so it reaches its assigned rack port without unnecessary slack.

Can I order MMC-to-SC or MMC-to-MPO?

Those options appear in the MMC project portfolio. A configuration drawing is required to confirm connector count, fiber use and mapping.

Are test reports available?

Yes. Agree on the fiber type, polish and acceptance limits when requesting per-assembly or lot-based IL/RL documentation.
