Overview

The BWN-PLC-IM-2X8-SC-UPC is a 2×8 PLC (planar lightwave circuit) optical splitter in an ABS box module, factory-terminated with SC/UPC connectors. It accepts up to two input fibers and distributes each input signal evenly across 8 output ports over the full 1260-1650nm window, so one or two feeder legs can serve 8 drop lines in PON, FTTH and enterprise networks.

Order this configuration when you need 8 drops per distribution point plus a second input for a protection feed or a second service, and when the installed plant is UPC-polished. The 100×80×10mm ABS module sits inside distribution boxes, splice trays and closures; it is not a sealed outdoor enclosure on its own. If your site standardizes on rack-mount LGX cassettes, or you need a steel-tube device for a sealed closure, see the siblings linked below. For category context, see the insertion ABS box module range and the PLC splitter category.

Key Features

  • 2×8 dual-input architecture — two input ports each fan out to the same 8 SC/UPC outputs; run a redundant feeder or a second service without a second splitter.
  • 11.0dB max insertion loss, 1.2dB uniformity — per-subscriber optical budget variation stays within a 1.2dB window across all 8 ports.
  • Broadband 1260-1650nm operation — one splitter passes 1310/1490nm GPON traffic and 1550nm video overlay alike — wavelength-independent power splitting.
  • 55dB return loss, 55dB directivity — back-reflection into the feeder stays controlled on the link.
  • -40~+85°C operating and storage range — 0.5dB temperature stability across that span, rated for unconditioned cabinets and closures.
  • 100×80×10mm ABS box — drop-in module for distribution boxes and splice trays.

Connectors, Fiber Types & Compatibility

This unit ships with SC/UPC connectors (blue housings). Mate it only with UPC-polished jumpers: plugging a UPC connector into an APC (green, 8° angled) adapter leaves an air gap, risks end-face damage, and collapses return loss at that joint. Family options: SC, LC or ST interfaces, APC or UPC polish; G657A bend-insensitive singlemode or customer-specified fiber at 0.9/2.0/3.0mm diameter, 1m standard leads.

The module plugs onto standard SC adapter plates inside distribution boxes, closures and cabinet builds — pair it with our fiber distribution boxes and fiber access terminals for a complete distribution point.

Applications

  • FTTH MDU and building distribution — eight drops from one cabinet position — the standard mid-size branch in PON builds; the second input takes a protection feeder.
  • Two services on one split point — a PON service and a second overlay share the same 8 outputs through the dual inputs.
  • Feeder-redundant splits — main and backup feeder legs on the same 8-way split, so a feeder cut does not take down the branch.
  • Street cabinets and closures — the ABS box protects the chip where a bare steel-tube device would need a sealed host enclosure.

For boxes, closures and drop hardware around this splitter, see our FTTx supporting products.

How to Choose: 2×8 Configuration Guide

2×8 or 1×8? Choose 2×8 when a second feeder must reach the same 8 outputs — feeder protection or a second service source. Choose 1×8 for single-feed builds with one less input to manage.

UPC or APC? Match the polish already in the field. SC/UPC (blue) fits enterprise, legacy CATV and data-network plant. Many operator PON standards specify SC/APC (green) — for APC builds, see the steel-tube 2×8 SC/APC sibling below or ask us for an ABS-box APC configuration.

Which package? This ABS box suits distribution boxes, wall enclosures and ODFs — see the insertion ABS box module range. Pick the steel-tube 2×8 for splice closures, or the LGX 2×8 cassette where the site standardizes on rack-mount LGX chassis.

Budget check. Start from the 11.0dB splitter loss, add connector pairs and splice points along each drop, and confirm the total against your OLT/ONU budget with the splitter loss chart (1×2 to 1×64).

FAQ

BWN-PLC-IM-2X8-SC-UPC 2×8 PLC Splitter SC/UPC (ABS Box) FAQ

What is a 2×8 insertion module PLC splitter?

A planar lightwave circuit splitter in a protective ABS box module: two connectorized inputs and eight connectorized outputs. Both inputs feed the same 8-way split plane — used for main and backup feeder layouts or two services on one point, which a single-input 1×8 cannot do.

What is the insertion loss of a 2×8 PLC splitter?

The 2×8 specification for this series is 11.0dB maximum insertion loss with 1.2dB uniformity. Add connector and splice losses when you build the link budget, and verify the total against your OLT/ONU power budget.

Is this splitter a media converter or does it need power?

No. A PLC splitter is a fully passive optical device — no power, no electronics, no signal conversion. It only divides (or combines) optical power. It is a different product category from media converters.

Should I choose SC/UPC or SC/APC?

Match the plant. Choose UPC when the surrounding infrastructure is UPC-standardized. For PON-based FTTH links where reflectance must stay low, choose the APC version — see the steel-tube SC/APC 2×8 linked above, or ask us for an ABS-box APC configuration.

ABS box, steel tube, or LGX cassette — which package for 2×8?

ABS insertion module (this page) when the splitter mounts in a distribution box or closure and needs its own protection. Steel tube when it lives inside another sealed enclosure. LGX cassette when the site standardizes on rack-mount LGX chassis — see the LGX 2×8 model linked above.

Can it be used outdoors?

Yes, installed inside a sealed cabinet, closure or distribution box. The module is rated -40~+85°C; the host enclosure provides the weather sealing.

Do you support OEM branding and project quantities?

Yes — send your split configuration, connector polish, lead type/length and quantities for a configuration review, documentation and pricing.
