Overview

The BWN-PLC-IM-2X16-SC-UPC is a 2×16 PLC (planar lightwave circuit) optical splitter in an ABS box module, factory-terminated with SC/UPC connectors. It accepts up to two input fibers and distributes each input signal evenly across 16 output ports over the full 1260-1650nm window, so one feeder can serve 16 drop lines in PON, FTTH, CATV and enterprise networks.

Order this configuration when you need 16 drops per feeder plus a second input for a protection feed or a second service, and when the installed plant is UPC-polished. The 120×80×18mm ABS module sits inside splice trays, distribution boxes and ODFs; it is not a sealed outdoor enclosure on its own. If your build specifies SC/APC, or you need a steel-tube mini module for splice closures, use the sibling models linked below. For category context, see the PLC splitter category and the fiber optic splitter overview.

Key Features

  • 2×16 dual-input architecture — two input ports each fan out to the same 16 SC/UPC outputs; run a redundant feeder or second service without a second splitter.
  • 14.4dB max insertion loss, 1.5dB uniformity — per-subscriber optical budget variation stays within a 1.5dB window across all 16 ports.
  • Broadband 1260-1650nm operation — one splitter passes 1310/1490nm GPON traffic and 1550nm video overlay alike — wavelength-independent power splitting, not wavelength multiplexing.
  • 55dB return loss, 55dB directivity — back-reflection into the feeder stays controlled on UPC links.
  • -40~+85°C operating and storage range — 0.5dB temperature stability across that span, rated for unconditioned cabinets and closures.
  • 120×80×18mm ABS box — drop-in module for splice trays and distribution boxes.

Connectors, Fiber Types & Compatibility

This unit ships with SC/UPC connectors (blue housings). Mate it only with UPC-polished jumpers: plugging a UPC connector into an APC (green, 8° angled) adapter leaves an air gap, risks end-face damage, and collapses return loss at that joint. Family options: SC, LC or ST interfaces, APC or UPC polish; G657A bend-insensitive singlemode or customer-specified fiber at 0.9/2.0/3.0mm diameter, 1m standard leads.

The 1260-1650nm window covers the common PON wavelength plans — 1310nm upstream and 1490nm downstream for GPON, 1270/1577nm for XGS-PON — plus 1550nm RF video overlay, so one splitter carries mixed services without reconfiguration. One clarification: this is a broadband power splitter, not a WDM — it splits optical power evenly at any wavelength in the window and does not combine or separate wavelength channels. For CWDM/DWDM channel multiplexing, contact our team for the WDM product line.

Applications

  • FTTH / PON distribution — one feeder serves 16 subscriber drops at an MDU, cabinet or distribution point; the second input takes a protection feeder from a diverse route.
  • CATV and RF-video overlay — the 1550nm broadcast wavelength passes inside the same 1260-1650nm window, and SC/UPC matches legacy UPC video distribution plant.
  • Enterprise and campus optical LAN — 16-way fiber distribution from a main equipment room where UPC jumper infrastructure is already installed.
  • 1+1 feeder protection — primary and standby OLT feeds share one 16-port output array, so a feeder cut does not take down 16 subscribers.

How to Choose: 2×16 Configuration Guide

2×16 or 1×16? Choose 2×16 when a second feeder must reach the same 16 outputs — feeder protection or a second service source. Choose 1×16 for single-feed builds: 13.5/13.7dB budget instead of 14.4dB, one less input to manage.

UPC or APC? Match the polish already in the field. SC/UPC (blue) fits enterprise, legacy CATV and data-network plant. Many operator PON standards specify SC/APC (green); if that is your specification, order the APC variant.

Which package? The ABS box suits splice trays, wall boxes and ODFs — see the ABS box module range. Pick LGX for chassis headends, a steel-tube mini module for splice closures, or a rack panel for ODF frames.

Fiber diameter and lead length? 0.9mm pigtails stay inside protected trays; choose 2.0mm or 3.0mm jacketed leads where fibers route between enclosures. Standard length is 1m; custom lengths avoid excess slack.

Budget check. Start from the 14.4dB splitter loss, add connector pairs and splice points along each drop, and confirm the total against your OLT/ONU budget with the splitter loss chart (1×2 to 1×64).

FAQ

BWN-PLC-IM-2X16-SC-UPC 2×16 PLC Splitter SC/UPC (ABS Box) FAQ

Is this 2×16 splitter a WDM device?

No. It is a broadband PLC power splitter. It splits optical power evenly across 16 outputs at any wavelength inside 1260-1650nm, but it does not combine or separate wavelength channels. If you need CWDM or DWDM multiplexing, that is a different product class — ask our team for the WDM catalog.

What does 2×16 mean, and how is it different from 1×16?

2×16 means two input ports and 16 output ports; each input is split evenly across the same 16 outputs. The second input typically carries a protection feeder or a second service. A 1×16 has one input and lower loss — 13.5/13.7dB versus 14.4dB for the 2×16.

What insertion loss should I budget per port?

Budget 14.4dB maximum for the splitter itself, allow for the 1.5dB worst-case uniformity spread between ports, then add connector and splice losses along each drop. The splitter loss chart linked above lists every standard configuration.

Should I order SC/UPC or SC/APC?

Match the polish already installed in your plant. SC/UPC (blue) suits enterprise, legacy CATV and data-network builds; many operator PON standards specify SC/APC (green). Never mate UPC and APC connectors in one link — the angled end face creates an air gap and can damage both ferrules.

Where does the ABS box install?

The 120×80×18mm module mounts inside splice trays, wall-mount distribution boxes and ODFs. No IP rating is stated, so outdoor builds should place it inside a sealed closure or cabinet. Optical specs cover -40~+85°C operating and storage, 0.5dB temperature stability.

Can I customize fiber length, diameter or connectors?

Yes. Standard leads are 1m at 0.9mm, 2.0mm or 3.0mm diameter, and lengths are customizable per order. The family supports SC, LC and ST connectors in APC or UPC polish, with G657A fiber or a customer-specified type. State all four parameters in your RFQ.
