OPGW: Optical Ground Wire

OPGW, called Optical ground wire, is a dual-functioning cable used in overhead power lines that combines the functions of ground wire and communications. It can transmit telecommunications signals over long distances and at high speeds. It also serves as a grounding wire for electric power systems. So, it can replace traditional static/shield/earth wires on overhead transmission lines with the added benefit of optical fibers. In addition, the OPGW cable is sheathed in a metal jacket. This metallic sheath also acts as a conductor and is ideal for power systems. OPGW conducts short-circuit current and shields the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes. At the same time, it can provide a telecommunications path for internal and third-party communications.

opgw cable

OPGW optical cables are installed on overhead transmission lines. This cable is usually designed with a central tube, a loose tube, filled with optical fibers. It can withstand mechanical and environmental stresses, and handle electrical faults on the transmission line without damaging the optical fibers. In addition, the loose tube is covered with waterproof glue to help protect the fiber from moisture. There are additional protective materials on the outside of the cable, such as aramid yarn, etc. At the same time, OPGW cables are designed for the temperature range of -40°C to 85°C, suitable for extreme temperature environments.

Bwnfiber is an OPGW cable supplier and manufacturer in China. We offer a wide range of OPGW cables with stainless steel or aluminum tubes. They come in different types, such as single-layer, double-layer, multi-layer, etc. Our OPGW is available in fiber counts of 6, 8, 12, 18, and 24, up to 144. These cables are highly conductive and have lightning protection. They have low attenuation and excellent bandwidth. In addition, Our OPGW cables are strictly tested to ensure compliance with industry standards and customer requirements. Over the years, our products have covered the USA, UK, Mexico, Chile, Brazil, South Africa, etc.

Characteristics of OPGW

High Capacity.

These cables have a high fiber count and provide a high capacity for data transmission.

Compared to underground fiber optic cables, these OPGW cables have a much lower overhead installation cost each kilometer.

Lightning Protection.

OPGW cable is sheathed in a metal jacket. This metallic sheath also acts as a conductor and shields the high-voltage conductors from lightning strikes.

Cable Protection.

This cable reduces damage to the cable due to excavations, the possibility of expanding the routes, etc.

OPGW cable shows excellent mechanical support and environmental hazard resistance. It can withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as high winds, extreme temperatures, and heavy ice loads.

Excellent Signal Quality.

OPGW cable is designed to provide low attenuation and low signal loss, ensuring excellent signal quality over long distances. This makes them suitable for high-speed data transmission and reliable communication.

Easy to Install.

OPGW cable can be installed on existing power transmission lines without additional infrastructure. They can be installed as a part of the initial power line installation or retrofitted onto existing lines.

No need to switch off the power

Wherever the towers have ground wires the OPGW cable can be laid under live conditions i.e. power need not be switched off.

Constructions of OPGW cable

OPGW cable has two constructions: Central loose tube and Multi-loose tube.

Central loose tube

The fibers are placed loosely in a central, aluminum tube filled with water-blocking gel. This tube protects the fiber under severe environmental conditions. The stainless steel tube may also be aluminum-clad steel. This stainless optical tube is located at the center of the optical cables protected by single or multiple layers of aluminum-clad steel, aluminum alloy wires, or steel wires. In addition, the metallic wires provide mechanical strength to withstand severe installation and operating conditions.

Multi-loose tube

The fibers are placed loosely in a stainless steel tube filled with water-blocking gel. Two or three stainless steel optical tubes are helically stranded in the inner layer of a multiple-layer cable. The multi-loose tube is designed mostly for very high fiber count requirements over 48 with the maximum fiber count reaching 144.

Applications of OPGW Cable

Power transmission

OPGW cable is used to transmit high-voltage power over long distances. The optical fibers embedded in the cable allow for real-time monitoring of the power transmission line, making it easier to detect faults and take corrective measures.

OPGW cable can be used for high-speed communication and data transmission. They are often used to establish telecommunication networks along power transmission lines.

Lightning Protection

OPGW cable is designed to provide lightning protection for power transmission lines. The optical fibers in the cable act as a lightning arrestor, dissipating the energy from lightning strikes.
