OPGW: Optical Ground Wire

OPGW, called Optical ground wire, is a dual-functioning cable used in overhead power lines that combines the functions of ground wire and communications. It can transmit telecommunications signals over long distances and at high speeds. It also serves as a grounding wire for electric power systems. So, it can replace traditional static/shield/earth wires on overhead transmission lines with the added benefit of optical fibers. In addition, the OPGW cable is sheathed in a metal jacket. Constructions of OPGW cable

OPGW cable has two constructions: Central loose tube and Multi-loose tube.

Central loose tube

The fibers are placed loosely in a central, aluminum tube filled with water-blocking gel. This tube protects the fiber under severe environmental conditions. The stainless steel tube may also be aluminum-clad steel. This stainless optical tube is located at the center of the optical cables protected by single or multiple layers of aluminum-clad steel, aluminum alloy wires, or steel wires. In addition, the metallic wires provide mechanical strength to withstand severe installation and operating conditions.

Multi-loose tube

The fibers are placed loosely in a stainless steel tube filled with water-blocking gel. Two or three stainless steel optical tubes are helically stranded in the inner layer of a multiple-layer cable. The multi-loose tube is designed mostly for very high fiber count requirements over 48 with the maximum fiber count reaching 144.
