Fiber Optic Cable Core

Fiber optic cable core, called a fiber core, is a cylinder of glass or plastic located in the center of the optical fiber and transports the light signals. It is the physical glass medium that guides the light in optical fiber. In addition, the fiber core also is the smallest and most crucial component of the optical fiber. The cores of most fibers are made of ultra-pure glass, but some have cores made of plastic. The fiber core is widely used in optical fibers, such as single-mode and multimode optical fibers. They are used in communications, military, defense, aerospace, and other fields.

To protect the fiber optic cable core, it is typically surrounded by glass or plastic claddings due to its brittle nature. In addition, the fiber core is designed to have a higher index of refraction than the cladding. The cladding traps the light in the core using an optical technique called “total internal reflection.” Then, the cladding holds the light inside the core and controls the direction in which light is spread. Optical power loss also occurs in the fiber core. It can be caused by various factors such as material impurities, scattering, and absorption. This causes the overall attenuation of the optical signal in the fiber, resulting in a decrease in signal strength.

It has a high refractive index and optical transparency. Therefore, it has been widely used in the field of modern communications.

Plastic fiber cores have the advantage of being made of cheaper materials than glass and operating in the visible range of the spectrum. However, they have higher losses and can only be used for short distances. Despite this, plastic fiber cores are also widely used for medical and industrial instruments.

Fiber core size is also known as the diameter or thickness of the fiber core. It is a critical aspect of fiber optic technology. The fiber core size has to be at least as big as the light source to collect light efficiently. If the light source is larger than the fiber core, much of its power goes into the fiber cladding and escapes quickly. The size of the core is different for different types of fiber optics.

The core diameter of a single-mode fiber optic cable is typically around 8-10 microns. The core diameters of multimode optical fibers include 50 microns, 62.5 microns, 100 microns, and 200 microns. The most common sizes used in the telecommunications industry are 50 microns and 62.5 microns. For plastic optical fibers, the fiber core size ranges from 0.25mm to 3mm of which 1mm is the most popular.

A fiber optic cable typically has multiple fiber cores, depending on its design and purpose. It determines its capacity to transmit data and support multiple communication channels simultaneously. Single-mode fiber optic cables usually have only one core. Multi-mode fiber optic cables can have multiple fiber cores, typically ranging from two to several dozen.
